1点11分的感触

以前,当我失恋后,我无意间在网上看到以下短文。
现在只是想拿来与大家分享;
因为我本身还觉得短文说得蛮有道理的。

“分手后不可以做朋友,
因为彼此伤害过;

Attacked, in school.

Nature and wildlife. it's so beautiful and abundant here in UQ. you have large areas of green green grass to relax... so serene. and also birds, lizards and lakes, especially birds, there are just so many.

but then again, this is not always a good thing. i just had a minor incident today.

school was only 9am to 10am today. so after 10, i went to meet my partner for presentation to discuss about how we should do it. and so i made my way to the biological sciences library, and on my way, cut across this very large field. i was admiring the nice architecture of the Law buildings, soaking up the warm sun as i walked, and then i heard this piercing shriek sound. so i saw this bird, sitting on the grass not far from where i was, calling out to what seemed like it's partner; which was approaching from my front. and hey... i thought they were such nice birds. until as i walked nearer, the one that was sitting on the ground stood up and ran away. at this moment, i noticed a nest with 4 eggs.

Cute... Just as i saw the eggs, the other bird which was approaching me suddenly swooped past me in close proximity. so i suppose the one which was sitting on the eggs was the female, and the other one was the male. and the female was calling out for the male to protect her, as she felt that she had a certain danger, which was me, approaching her. she was just trying to protect her eggs. now, that's a good thing. but. but as i continued walking and minding my own business, the male bird came on me again and hit me from behind as i was already walking away.

the attacker

now, this is not sportsmanship. you do not hit someone from behind. thou we may be different species, but the rules of the game are the same. Never hit someone from behind. but being the gracious me, i took it like a man, and walked off. they were slightly lucky i was in a good mood today. if not, they could have ended up like the picture below.

First week in school

can only be described using: busy, tiring, hectic and troubled.

Busy is because i let myself go for 8 courses when we only had to take 4 courses. i merely wanted to go for as many course as i could attend, to get a feel of those courses. to see what are the courses i like and could understand. therefore everyday was hectic for me, running from lecture to lecture. and thus this leads to me getting tired at the end of the day, everyday. somehow reminds me of the saying, ‘人,利害就好;不要假利害。’ Schoooooool. what else do you expect?

as of right now, i am taking Bachelor of Science, and i have chose to major in Genetics and Microbiology. so after going for so many different courses, what i'll be taking this semester are the following: DNA & Protein Technology, Human Molecular Genetics & Disease, Microbial Biotechnology and lastly, Microbes & Human Health.

for those who do not understand the system, let me try to briefly explain. each year there are 16 credits(#=credits, for short) to complete. thus each sem you have to do 8#. each course is 2#, so in a sem you have to do 4 courses. to grad with BSc, you have to take 6 science courses of which all must be year 3 courses, and you can take another 2 courses which can be of any kind that interests you(eg. french, psychology, architecture...) at any year. and to major in a certain field, out of the 6 courses, 4 have to be from the major that you want to go into. so being the 怕输新加坡人, most singaporean students will take double major. because all you need to do is to take science year 3 courses for all 8 course, and you're paying the same amount of tuition fee so might as well get the best out of it. and as we all know, double major degree looks better.

and so, here comes my trouble. i am at the crossroads of choosing to take single major or double major. to be; or not to be? man... and i thought choosing to eat a single whopper or double whopper is difficult enough.

the reason there's this problem is because, i know having a double degree looks good for my future career. but then i was thinking, for once in our life we have a chance to come to a university to study, shouldn't we follow hearts and also study other courses that interests us althought it may not prove to be useful to what we are going to work in the future?

then i also weighed the pros and cons of single and double majors.

single major pros: more time to focus on work as workload is lesser. and when there's more time we can have more focus and you can concentrate on a paticular field, thus increasing the chances of getting good grades and results. you get to do other courses that are interesting or pursue your other interests, enjoy uni studies. less stressed.
single major cons: look less impressive as compared to double major when looking for a job. the other courses of interests may look useless to employer although good results obtained in single major. in terms of life science, it's not gonna help at all if i have courses that are not related like french, aboriginal and torres strait islander studies
or food science and so on. what's worst is i'm a one year degree.

double major pros: as mentioned earlier, look better or more prestigious than other job seekers with single major. might have higher chance of securing a job as all courses studied are related to job.
double major cons: more workload. meaning less time distributed for each work. tight assignment and report deadline, not to mention mid-sem exams and 4 end of sem exam to study for. all these might lead to lousier grades. and so, what's the point of a double major when your grades suck in the end. especially when you stress yourself and have toiled for so hard.

these are all i can come up with now, but the problem is not to identify the pros and cons. it's about how i should go about making a proper and sound decision as to what i should do? i know that there are people who have done double majors, and so this can be done. however, that doesn't mean i have to be like everybody else.

my sensible friends who have taken time to read and understand this, i thank you all very much. but i hope to hear some advice from any one of you. do email me and voice me your opinions. thanks.

Mount Coot-tha

It was a fine sunny Sunday. there was nothing much to do, so i decided to head for Mount Coot-tha for some sightseeing. well, first let me provide a brief introduction to the mountain(following excerpt obtained from wikipedia).

Mount Coot-tha is a mountain as well as suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The mountain is 287 metres above sea level and forms the eastern extent of the Taylor Range. It is a prominent landmark approximately 6 km to the west of the Brisbane central business district. Before the Moreton Bay penal settlement, Mount Coot-tha was the home of the Turrbal Aboriginal people. Early Brisbane people called it One Tree Hill when bush at the top of the mountain was cleared except for one large eucalypt tree. The Aboriginal people of the area used to come to the mountain to collect ‘ku-ta’ (honey) that was produced by the native stingless bee. Mount Coot-tha (Place of Honey), a derivative of (the indigenous term), replaced the former title ‘One Tree Hill' in 1880 when the area was declared a Public Recreation Reserve. and is visible from much of the city.

Mount Coot-tha is one of Brisbane's most popular tourist destinations. The scenic drive, from the base of Mount Coot-tha to the lookout, is a winding, climbing journey that offers spectacular views of the greater Brisbane area and of the mountains and coastline that disappear into the horizon. The Mount Coot-tha Reserve contains more than 1500 hectares of natural bushland, including JC Slaughter Falls, as well as native wildlife. Mount Coot-tha Reserve also shares a border with Brisbane Forest Park, which adds a further 25,000 hectares. There are several popular walking tracks around Mount Coot-tha, one of which includes an art display comprising works produced by local Aboriginal artists. The tracks vary in difficulty, with most involving some uphill sections or steps.

you can see part of Brisbane River

closer view of the river

10X zoom view of the City

smack in the middle of the picture is where UQ is located. on the right of the river.

i got adventurous and went for the JC Slaughter Falls

air is really fresh when you are in nature, you don't actually feel tired. and weather was so cooling and good, wasn't sweating at all.

i'm lying on the slab of stone behind me in the above picture. makes a good, cold and hard bed.

since i was already there, might as well go for the art trail.

i couldn't exactly find the Falls. slightly disappointing. but i think this should be the one...

this should be the picnic area, or just a big patch of grass.

ok. i came across this huge log that fell across to the other side of the ravine. below is a ravine that's about 7-10m deep

and i just had to walk across for a picture

tarzan wannabe in jeans and lovely pink

as the trail ended, i came to what i think is another picnic spot

i don't know where this is, but it looked good

when i started the trail, it was slightly after 1pm. when i reached this travelling goodness-knows-what, it was 4pm. haha...

i minted this coin myself at the top of the summit. it's a copper penny.

all in all, the trail was interesting thou there wasn't any exotic wildlife. so i didn't manage to hunt any wallabys, kangroos nor koalas. hence i was damn hungry after the trail. had to resort to take a bus back to the city to have some food.

came across this monument when at city. it is for remembrance of those who died while fighting world wars 1 and 2.

central station

we have this in australia, in the city. be jealous people.... haha.

but at the end after dinner, i went for pancakes. looks like shit in this pic, but 'Chocolate jewels' as they call this. chocolate pancake topped with chocolate ice cream, house-made chocolate sauce and whipped cream with icing. was high with chocolate overdose that night.
